While oil production declined a bit in December, industry leaders are warning of more on the way.
The North Dakota Petroleum Council warns that oil production won't grow forever and is cautioning state budget makers to keep that in mind in the next few years.
But, they don't necessarily expect a major overall drop any time soon.
"All things don't go up forever, we've got to begin to plan longer term. That means that the state of North Dakota and the people who write the budget should recognize that and all of us should think about reaching that plateau and then sustaining that for a long time." said Ron Ness, ND Petroleum Council.
Ness says it could happen in as soon as five years.
