Drive from Canada into the United States by the International Peace Garden and you'll see a new flag flying. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians says their flag is just the beginning of new plans for the area.
The proposals include a designated tribal flag area and artifacts from other tribes, including a recreated earthen hut. Les Thomas with North Dakota's Native Tourism Alliance says building this will educate the public about the tribes.
“It's been a long time coming. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa were here long before North Dakota. So along with the North Dakota flag, the US flag and the Canadian flag, all as partners we're all one,” said Les Thomas, North Dakota Native Tourism Alliance.
Thomas didn't have a timeline on when all the additions would be finalized and installed.
