UPDATE (1:30 p.m.): Velva Public School remains in a soft lockdown. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Game & Fish Department are investigating.

The district says that, as of now, Friday night’s football game between Velva and Bishop Ryan will go on as scheduled, but the district will revisit the matter, depending on the information they get from investigators.

If a member of the public spots the animal, they are advised to stay away, and call 9-1-1.

The Velva Public School is under a lockdown after a mountain lion was spotted near the C-Store Friday morning.

Superintendent Dave Schoch confirmed the news with Your News Leader but could not speak as to how long the lockdown would last. The district is in communication with the Sheriff's Department on the matter.

Schoch said that parents have been notified of the situation. School will resume as normal inside, but people cannot come and go from the building.
