Next week, Minot will be hosting its first Juneteenth event to honor and remember the day slavery ended in the United States.

The event will start at noon next Wednesday, June 19, in front of City Hall.

The day will consist of a guest speaker, poetry reading, flag raising and the reading of a Juneteenth proclamation.

In Texas, on June 19, 1865 the abolition of slavery announcement was made for the overall former Confederate States of America.

June 19 didn't become recognized as Juneteenth Independence Day in America until 1997.
