Students playing high school sports must have a pre-participation physical before starting the season.

While many might see these as routine visits before hitting the field, they can reveal more than you think.

Dr. David Ugobi joined Trinity's pediatric team in June and says that sports physicals are an important step in building a relationship with your doctor.

These appointments can help the doctor understand where there could be improvements in the athlete's health.

Sports physicals not only make sure the athlete is fit enough to play, but also check if there are symptoms to more serious problems that could worsen during competition.

“Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It's a mouthful but essentially it is an obstruction in the heart. When those people play sports, sometimes they go into cardiac arrest without warning,” Ugobi said.

These visits can help monitor asthma for athletes as well.
