A Mandan man is accused of shooting paintballs at dogs on Tuesday evening.

Court documents say the Burleigh County Sheriff's Office responded to the Desert's main sand bar and found a dog with several orange marks on it.

Deputies say they identified the owner of the dogs as 28-year-old Corey Knippel. When Knippel was questioned about the markings he told deputies he was shooting paintballs near the dogs and hit them accidentally.

Documents say witnesses told deputies Knippel was standing very close to the dogs and shot them several times. Witnesses also say the dogs could be heard yelping.

Knippel has been charged with animal abuse and had his bond set at $1,000.
