Mandan is celebrating Arbor Day by planting trees with kids.

Thursday morning, city arborist Katie Nagel and students from West River Head Start planted a maple tree on school grounds.

The city usually celebrates Arbor Day on the first Friday of May, but made the change to Thursday this year so the children could get involved, since they aren't in class Friday.

Nagel says she hopes it gets them interested in planting trees at home with their parents.

“Trees are incredibly important to our environment, and if they can take that away and just feed on that little bit of education, that love for trees, and carry that in the future, that's going to make a big impact,” Nagel said.

Mandan is also designated as a Tree City USA. That means it is recognized for its urban forestry management practices.
