The Chicken Ownership ordinance passed in the Mandan City Commission meeting Tuesday night.
Residents are now allowed to keep up to four hens in a coop that can't be visible from the street. People spoke on both sides of the issue.
"We don't leave our dog food out because that can attract pests. We clean up after our dogs, and we'd do the same for our chickens. It's responsible pet ownership," said Andrea Soule, Mandan.
"I think there is a place for chickens, but that should be in the country. I don't think Mandan should become an old Mcdonald farm," said Martin Schaff, Mandan.
The initial price for the city permit was set at $100, and $50 for the annual renewal. Home owner agreements will supersede the ordinance.
