Man accused of misusing electric collar on dog is headed to trial

BISMARCK, N.D. - A Bismarck man accused of abusing his dog with an electronic collar for several months pleaded not guilty Monday.

Bismarck detectives say 44-year-old Shawn Belgarde is accused of keeping an electronic collar on his yellow Labrador at all times and on its highest setting.

Police say the dog had layers of fur missing from his neck.

Belgarde is accused of using the collar on the dog until it would become weak, quiver and lay down, according to court documents.

The dog was taken from the home after police conducted a search warrant.

He’s charged with animal cruelty and animal neglect.
