Minot Main Street Minute: Michelle's Affair Salon and Flowershop Opens in Velva

If you want to get a haircut and buy some flowers for your loved one, chances are you have to visit two places.

Velva entrepreneur Michelle Schmaltz has brought the two together.

“One-stop shop, you come in, you get your hair cut, and you can still go home with flowers for your wife!” said owner Michelle Schmaltz.

Schmaltz recently opened Michelle's Affair, her combination salon and flower shop. It's her way of giving the people of Velva a place to go without having to travel.

“We have a lot of elderly people that don't have transportation to Minot. We have families that don't want to drive to Minot every day. It's just a convenience thing for a lot of people,” said Schmaltz.

Schmaltz moved to North Dakota from New York state just over 20 years ago, and said the two industries run in her family. “My mother was a cosmetologist, my oldest sister was a cosmetologist, and my middle sister is a horticulturist/florist,” she said.

Schmaltz offers haircuts, nail painting, pedicures, waxing, perms, tanning--just about anything a big-city salon would provide.

When asked her favorite part of this multi-faceted business she said: “I'd have to say the people, my clients."

And they love it, too.

“Convenient. I don't have to drive,” said Rachel Hansen, a customer.

Meanwhile, she runs her floral operation in the back of the shop.

“That's another nice thing about doing flowers in a small town. You know your community pretty well, so you know what a lot of people like and what they don't like,” she said.

Bringing the fashion of the big city to small town North Dakota.

Michelle's Affair is located at 508 Hwy 52 West in Velva, next to the Lariat Lounge.

Schmaltz said she's working on a Facebook page, but if you want to call to set up an appointment or make an order, you can call her at (701) 720-6062.

Her hours are: Monday – Tuesday noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday – Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Schmaltz works every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and when she works Saturdays she takes off the following Monday.
