One former government teacher says she remembers reaching a time in the school year where Bush would be introduced to students.

"What I liked is when we would go through Desert Storm, it was short because he didn't want to put all of our soldiers through harms way, he experienced that in World War II. He was just kind and bipartisan and I appreciate all that," said Caroline Azure, former government teacher.

Even though he was a Republican president, Bush received bipartisan respect.

"He was a person that I think was able to work with Democrats. He was fairly intelligent and his wife was, I think, one of his people behind him that made him do some of the things he did and I thought he turned out to be a fairly good president," said Lancelot Azure, Democrat.

As the Magic City lowers their flags to half staff, members of the community say they can't help but be proud to be American.

"How do you feel to see some of those American flags at half staff today? I think he more than deserves it. He more than deserves it" said Minot Resident, Eddie Faine
