MPS offers free, reduced lunch for furloughed families

MANDAN, N.D. - Mandan Public Schools is offering a break to families of federal workers who are furloughed.

During the shutdown, the district has made them eligible to receive free or reduced meals for the remainder of the school year, noting that children who are well nourished are more eager to learn and do better in class.

"We want to demonstrate to our families empathy that we have towards our plight. Finally, some people missing their first paychecks and that put families in a tight squeeze and we just want to let them know that we're going to try to do whatever we can," said Jeff Fastnacht, Mandan Public Schools assistant superintendent.
