BISMARCK, N.D. - A dedication ceremony was held on the Heritage Center lawn this afternoon.
State officials from North and South Dakota and New Mexico honored Shane Balkowitsch for recreating and preserving Native American culture through wet plate photos.
Representative Ruth Buffalo says watching the pictures being taken reminds her of her great great grandfather who used the same style photography.
"It's very powerful, the whole process and sitting in the chair and the lights go out and you're sitting still. Just trying to imagine what our ancestors were thinking when they were taking these very exact wet plates," said Rep. Ruth Buffalo, District 27.
250 photos were released in a book today at the Heritage Center. Three more books with the historic photos are planned for release.
