Hometown Heroes: Sister Kathleen Atkinson

BISMARCK, N.D. - There is only one more day for people in Bismarck-Mandan to vote for their favorite Hidden Hometown Heroes.

The competition is put together by the Bismarck Larks, Bismarck Magazine, and Scheels to recognize the hidden heroes in the area. Nominations are submitted by residents online. Eighteen nominees made the list to be voted on and more than a thousand votes have been counted so far.

Sister Kathleen Atkinson is one of the nominees for the competition this year. She is the head of Ministry on the Margins in Bismarck. They try to help those people that fall through the cracks of other services. She says they help more than 800 people every week.

"It's the community, and it's the broader community than just Bismarck that gives us everything that we need to reach out, so this Hometown Hero thing for me is just recognizing this movement of people reaching out to the poor and the marginalized," said Atkinson.
