Hearing next month for Bottineau shooting suspect

BOTTINEAU, N.D. – The suspect in a fatal shooting at a Bottineau trailer park last week will appear next month for his preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors have charged 19-year-old Carlos Valentin with B-felony manslaughter. Valentin made his first court appearance with an attorney Wednesday.

Investigators say Valentin was playing with a 9 mm handgun last Wednesday, when the gun went off, striking a man in the side of the chest.

The victim was pronounced dead at a Bottineau hospital. Valentin said he was unaware the gun was loaded.

He’ll appear for his preliminary hearing Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. in Bottineau. It’s unclear if he’ll enter a plea at that time.

Valentin remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.
