Thursday is Giving Hearts Day in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota -- a day dedicated to giving back.

There are over 500 options of charities and nonprofits to donate to on the Giving Hearts Day Website.

The day has helped those participating raise over $70 million since it was founded in 2008. This year, one nonprofit is raising money to renovate a special new building that will become its new home.

The students at Northern Plains Dance love what they do and where they do it.

"Anytime I'm like in stress or whatever, this is like my place to just like let it all go and everybody's so friendly here and it's just like a big community," said Northern Plains Dance Student Isabella Kalberer.

"Studies show that dance has benefits way beyond just the studio and into kids' academic lives and their social lives," said Director Hollis Mackintosh Heid.

Over the years, class sizes have grown, but the studio has not.

Directors purchased a new building and plan to transfer to the new spot at 1416 east front avenue. However, the nonprofit needs help funding renovations. Giving Hearts Day provides it with a platform for those looking to help to donate to the cause.

"When we talk about Giving Hearts Day, when we talk about our students, we always remind ourselves of that wonderful Marylin Monroe quote. 'If you give a girl a pair of shoes, she can change the world,'" said Mackintosh Heid.

With every step and grip of the bar, the dancers are working to improve themselves.

"We're just like one big family and we support each other and it'll be amazing to move in next year," said Kalberer.

The larger studio will allow more students the opportunity to change the world in their own, unique ways.
