Geneseo man sentenced for killing migratory birds

The US Attorney's Office says 40-year-old Jesse Mertins from Geneseo must pay a $15,000 fine for killing dozens of migratory birds.

Attorney Drew Wrigley says Mertins set up pole traps around an exotic waterfowl enclosure to protect the birds he was raising.

Those traps killed owls, hawks, a heron and more, violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
