Fish kill hits parts of Des Lacs River

BURLINGTON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota health and wildlife officials say they are investigating a fish kill in the Des Lacs River.

Walleye, northern pike, perch, white suckers and numerous smaller fish have been found floating in the water and strewn along the riverbank in the Burlington area.

A state health department expert said there have been no reports of dead fish at a wildlife refuge upstream.

He said a lack of oxygen in the water due to low river levels this summer might have caused the kill, but officials are sending a crew to the area to do testing in coordination with the state Game and Fish Department.
