A federal prisoner is back in custody after escaping a Mandan facility several weeks before his release.

The affidavit says 31-year-old Waylon Gardner is charged with escape after leaving the Mandan Centre, Inc. facility.

Gardner was switched to that facility on Sept. 11 for pre-release custody. His projected release from custody was Oct. 13.

Staff members at the facility noticed Gardner was gone when they did a headcount around 11 p.m. Sept. 23. Camera’s show he left the facility less than two hours before that.

On Oct. 17, Gardener was arrested by McLean County deputies when they found him hitchhiking.

Gardener is serving time for assault resulting in a bodily injury and assault of a dating partner with substantial bodily injury.

Documents say Gardner will have an arraignment hearing on Nov. 14.
