Embattled former Wells County Sheriff strikes plea deal

FESSENDEN, N.D. – The former Wells County Sheriff facing a series of charges has struck a plea deal with prosecutors.

Johnny Lawson faced five charges in total, two felonies and three misdemeanors, stemming from a state investigation into reported misconduct on the job. The charges had included bribery and conspiracy to deliver meth.

The deal, accepted by Judge Daniel Narum Thursday, would call for Lawson to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges of false reports to law enforcement or other security officials and ingesting a controlled substance, according to the Wells County clerk of court’s office.

Narum had previously rejected a plea deal last October. The judge will sentence Lawson March 26.
