Competency evaluation for Belcourt man charged with child sex crimes

MINOT, N.D. – A Belcourt man accused of raping an eight-year-old girl in 2009 will undergo an evaluation to find out if he is competent to stand trial, at the request of his attorney.

Prosecutors have charged 54-year-old Todd Trottier with four counts of gross sexual imposition.

The girl told investigators the incidents happened four nights in a row, and that she woke up to Trottier lying in bed with her.

Trottier’s defense team told Judge Richard Hagar Wednesday morning they would file motion for a competency evaluation.

The state prosecutor told Hagar the girl’s family wants resolution to the case.

Trottier will appear for his pretrial conference Jan. 31. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.
