Chuck Hagel defends Heitkamp's veterans voting record on campaign swing
Former Nebraska Senator and U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel joined Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-ND, on the campaign trail this week, defending her record in the final weeks of the North Dakota Senate election.
Hagel and Heitkamp are visiting seven North Dakota towns in a 48-hour span. The pair visited Bismarck, New Town, and Minot Tuesday.
The former Defense Secretary visited Minot Air Force Base in 2014 while serving in the Obama Administration.
Hagel is defending Heitkamp's record on veterans, following television ads questioning her voting record earlier this year.
“I'm a Republican. She's a Democrat. I get that. But what this country needs more of is character and courage and judgment. And she's displayed that in six years,” said Hagel.
“I have never voted against the veterans, nor would I ever vote against the veterans. I have always supported, whether it has been healthcare choices, whether it has been supporting the VA, or whether it has been absolutely just making sure that the commitment that we made when somebody put on a uniform is honored,” said Heitkamp.
Next Tuesday, Donald Trump, Jr., will visit the Williston State College campus to support Kevin Cramer.
