BISMARCK, N.D. - Students at Century High School are competing in a Christmas tree decorating contest.

However, one of the trees symbolizes much more than the holidays for a faculty member.

Ryan Kaufman is the chair of the Social Studies department, but is also major with the North Dakota National Guard.

The department's theme will honor fallen North Dakota soldiers from the year 2000 on.

The tree will be decorated in yellow and black ribbons for students and staff to wear in support of military personal.

Kaufman says there are names of those who served with him in Iraq. There's also former students of his recognized on the tree.

“Those names on this tree are important, but all of the names, especially from the North Dakota National Guard, are super important to recognize that they paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us,” said Kaufman.

Dog Tags will be available for students and staff to write the names of family or friends that are active or veterans of the armed forces to hang on the tree.

Century High School will announce the Christmas tree decorating contest winner within the next couple of days.
