DEVILS LAKE, N.D. - Sixteen head of cattle were killed when a livestock trailer rolled over Friday afternoon on Highway 2 just west of Devils Lake.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a semi, driven by Garrett Hoopman of Dunseith, was headed eastbound, towing a livestock trailer with 83 head of cattle.

A truck tractor passed Hoopman shortly after noon, leaving him in a cloud of snow fog. He could not see the roadway and ran off the road into a snow-filled median.

The semi struck an embankment, causing the livestock trailer to flip on its right side. The cattle were headed for a sale barn in Devils Lake.

Hoopman was not wearing a seat belt and refused medical attention for minor injuries.

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association assisted at the scene.
