BELCOURT, N.D. – The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa tribe has declared a fire emergency burn ban, effective immediately, to run through the end of May.

Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure signed the declaration Friday. It prohibits open burning in or near grasslands, brush, undergrowth, woods, prairie, or slough whenever the fire danger rating for Rolette County is high, very high, or extreme, or if the National Weather Service has declared a ‘Red Flag Warning’ for the county.

Burning will be allowed on days when the fire danger rating is low to moderate.

Those who violate the ban could face up to 30 days in jail and a $1,000 to $5,000 fine.
