The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department received a call Sunday about a dead dog in northeast Bismarck.

Deputies say the owners were out of town, but family found the dog deceased with a blood trail.

Officials say the dog had a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies found and spoke to a man who they believed might have been connected to the incident.

“He said he shot at the dog to scare it due to past problems,” said Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Kelly Leben.

The man was not arrested, and they are sending it to the state’s attorney for review.

The owner of the dog says it was a 7 1/2-year-old chocolate lab that had its collar on for their underground fence. The owner said there have been no previous complaints about the dog.
