BISMARCK, N.D. - The Bismarck Renaissance Zone Authority is considering extending the zone to an island in north Bismarck.
The expansion is proposed for the two blocks on each side of State Street, north of Interstate 94. The blocks would encompass the Kmart site, Gateway Mall, and a few surrounding properties.
The state rules allot the Renaissance Zone Authority a certain amount of blocks to designate as the Renaissance Zone. Properties in this zone can qualify for property or income tax breaks for new development.
"The intent is really to facilitate redevelopment and remove and kind of blighted conditions or disinvestment and really encourage property owners to do something new with their properties," said Bismarck City Planner Daniel Nairn.
No property owners in the proposed area have plans for the space yet. No decisions have been made yet.
City officials say it would be a few more months for there to be a decision and would like the public to weigh in.
