Bismarck Police give bicyclists safety tips

BISMARCK, N.D. - Warmer temperatures and more sun means more people out on their bicycles. Bismarck Police want to remind bicyclists and motorists how to stay safe on the roads.

Officer Pat Renz says people should always wear helmets while riding.

He recommends parents check their children's helmets before starting to ride this Spring.

He also advises people ride where they are comfortable, and recreation trails are a safe option.

Renz says if a child crashes and injures his or her head, it could cause a lifelong injury.

"Kids especially need to be taught to wear helmets at an early age and then it becomes a habit it's really important that a child's helmet fits properly so the helmet that they had on last year may not work for them this year," said Renz.

Renz says drivers need to be aware of bicyclists and some roads in Bismarck have lanes for them.
