Bismarck Police after New Years safety tips

BISMARCK, N.D. - Bismarck Police have some advice on how to stay safe while celebrating the New Year holiday.

They advise people think about how they're going to get home before drinking. Some options include a designated driver, a taxi or staying the night.

Sgt. Mark Buschena says some sources estimate that about half of the drivers on the road New Years Eve are impaired. He has suggestions if you're driving close to an impaired driver.

"If you think you're behind a drunk driver, give them plenty of space. If you think one is following you, try to pull over, get out, make your first right turn and get out of their way. If you think one is coming toward you try and pull over to the right and stop if safe to do so, then call police with a vehicle description," says Buschena.

Buschena adds that drunk drivers face possible jail time, license suspension, fines and the real possibility of hurting other drivers.
