Bismarck Fire Department reminds people to adopt a hydrant

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Bismarck Fire Department reminds people to help clear snow from around fire hydrants, especially with the recent storm we've had.

There are over 4,000 fire hydrants in the city of Bismarck, and shoveling away the snow can help save firefighters time when they're out putting out flames.

"In a firefighting operation, one of the main concerns is establishing a water supply so firefighters can get water on a fire in the case of a structure fire or a house fire," said Owen Fitzsimmons, fire marshal.

Fitzsimmons says to make a clear path from the street to the hydrant and then a three-foot working radius around it so firefighters have access to the connectors.
