Investment scams are among the top 10 fraud-type crimes people fall victim to, including a local Bismarck State College student.
Very little work for a large reward sounds too good to be true and maybe it is. Especially for a first year BSC student who was scammed out of thousands of dollars.
An unknown person lurking behind a computer screen posed as a legit business through the college's Job Seekers network. It not only fooled the student, but also the college staff who track the program. The student believed she was an online shopping assistant, buying and than send gift cards worth more than $3,300.
"We are very concerned and wanted to make sure we could be everything possible to give the student some options in terms of what her next steps were but also to go through and see if we couldn't figure out want had happened and how to avoid this happening in the future," said Kate Millner, director of Advising & Counseling Services.
Millner says the job seekers program is not affected in any way and employees will continue to monitor every employer submission closely.
