Attorney assigned to man accused of attacking priest

MCHENRY COUNTY, N.D. – The courts have officially assigned a defense attorney to represent a Minnesota man facing a series of charges stemming from an attack on a North Dakota priest last month.

William Hartl will represent 42-year-old Chad Legare, according to the North Dakota District Court website.

Legare faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and burglary, stemming from the attack on Fr. Robert Wapenski at St. Francis Xavier Church in Anamoose, N.D. on Jan. 30.

According to unsealed court records, investigators say that Wapenski was found beaten and bloodied, and someone had tried to strangle him with speaker wire.

Court records indicate that Legare had claimed Wapenski raped a woman, though investigators say that the woman in question had changed her story—first denying the accusations and then renewing them.

Legare remains in custody on a $250,000 bond in the Heart of America Correctional Center in Rugby and will appear again in court at the end of the month.
