ALEXANDRIA, Minn. – Authorities in Douglas County, Minn., have arrested a man in connection with a reported attack on a priest in Anamoose, N.D. on Jan. 30.
Alexandria Police arrested 42-year-old Chad Legare without incident Monday. Legare will face charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and burglary, pending extradition to North Dakota.
McHenry County Sheriff Trey Skager and County State’s Attorney Joshua Frey announced Legare’s arrest in a joint press release Tuesday afternoon.
The Diocese of Fargo had confirmed that Fr. Robert Wapenski was attacked at St. Francis Xavier Church in Anamoose.
The attack prompted temporary lockdowns of area schools and medical centers.
The motive for the attack is unclear, but authorities say it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the general public.
Court records in McHenry County against Legare are sealed.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in the case.
