Applications are out for the 2020 Specialty Crop Grants.

The USDA is funding the Specialty Crop Grants, which allocated $3.1 million to about 24 projects last year.

The program is designed to aid farmers who grow specialty crops such as sunflowers, lentils, dry beans and peas. They can use the money for research, marketing or group projects.

"People have good ideas at times but they never have an opportunity to explore it, vet it out-- to really develop it and take it to a tangible point. These types of dollars help them do that," said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring.

He says organizations, groups, and individuals are welcome to apply.
However, the project should be targeted at an improved system for producers of specialty crops.

The application deadline for the 2020 Specialty Crop Grants is Wednesday, Jan. 8.
