House bill 620 stirs debate over ADA protections as it moves though Congress

Some local advocates for people with disabilities are calling foul over a bill making its way through Congress.

Scott Burlingame with Independence, Inc., has shown concern over House bill 620, and the impact it would have on the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

The bill would address punitive damage cases. While North Dakota is not directly impacted by such cases, Burlingame said he's concerned about it rolling back some ADA protections, and drawing out the process for claims against non-ADA compliant businesses.

“It had been introduced for years and it died in committee. this is the first time when it was passed yesterday by the house that it's ever actually gotten anywhere. And that's scary that we are beginning to kind of roll back the civil right protections that available in the Americans with Disabilities Act," said Burlingame.

The House passed the bill last week.

It now heads to the Senate for consideration.
