First North Dakota native appointed Catholic Bishop

Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced Wednesday Pope Francis has appointed Austin A. Vetter of Bismarck, North Dakota to be the Bishop of the Diocese of Helena, Montana.

Catholic News Service released the statement Wednesday morning, also announcing a news conference will be held in Bismarck at 11 am on the appointment.

Reverend Austin Vetter was previously the pastor of The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit.

The Diocese of Helena is comprised of 57 parishes, 38 mission churches and has 45,000 registered Catholics.

Vetter was ordained into the priesthood in 1993 and replaces Bishop George Thomas. Bishop Thomas was appointed the Bishop of Las Vegas by Pope Francis in February of 2018

Father Vetter grew up on a farm near Linton, he is the youngest of 12 children.
