Last year was a relatively safe year to travel by air.
The aviation safety network says there were 10 fatal commercial passenger and cargo air crashes in 2017 and 44 passengers and crew members were killed.
That's much lower than the five-year average of 17 crashes with 495 deaths.
All of last year's plane deaths occurred either on cargo planes or smaller, propeller-driven passenger aircraft.
In addition, major US airlines have not had a fatal crash since 2001, and there has not been a fatality aboard a US carrier in nearly nine years.
