Sports Spotlight - Derek Shoen
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - He’s leading the Bismarck Larks in runs batted in, but if you watched the Marauders this spring that shouldn’t surprise you.
The Bismarck Larks are celebrating five years this summer and are utilizing local talent.
One of those is U-Mary’s Derek Shoen. Shoen is an infielder and pitcher for the Marauders, something he’s carrying over into the summer.
But Shoen wasn’t always given the green light to play both positions in college.
“I went out of high school to Iowa Western, and I was a two-way there my first year. Then I got told I wasn’t a college pitcher anymore and I got invited back as just a walk-on was all. That’s where Tanner Spencer came in, and I mean he’s a great guy, and he’s said like, ‘hey, I think I can make you into something.’ So that’s what got me here,” said Shoen.
Shoen played well enough at both positions to earn 1st-team all-conference this spring. He hit .340 and led the team with 11 homers. He also threw 37 innings on the mound, striking out 33.
Coming off their first NSIC postseason appearance, Shoen says it meant something to the guys.
“I mean it was electric because honestly it’s like we’re starting over here, and everything is new. It was year one, and now we’re going to go into year two, and it’s going to be fun, and I expect even better things,” said Shoen.
A spring of collegiate ball and two weeks of the summer season has given Shoen enough insight into just how passionate the Bismarck community is.
“It’s fun because like yeah this is the community I play for anyways, so they’re huge Larks fans, and I hope they’re just going to jump on board and be huge Marauder fans soon. I mean we’re going to have a good style of baseball coming, and this is just a baseball city. I love it. It’s a lot of fun playing here,” said Shoen.
The Northwoods League is something for Shoen that he’s been well aware of since he was a kid.
Now playing in the premier summer league, he’s had his moments of reflection.
“I texted my mom this my first practice here. I was looking at the ball and the Northwoods League logo, and I texted her and said ‘mom, it kind of just sunk into me.’ I was like ‘I used to be the kid going to these (Mankato) Moondogs games dreaming of playing here.’ So just for the fact I’m here you get to be like a minor league ball schedule, you get to be around a lot of other great players and learn from a lot of other guys, and it’s amazing,” said Shoen.
Shoen and the Larks will be on television this weekend as they play the LaCrosse Loggers on Saturday, June 12th at 6:30 pm CDT on Your News Leader and Sunday, June 13th at 4:00 pm CDT on West Dakota FOX.
