MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. – Officials at Minot Air Force Base have identified the victim in Friday’s incident on Rice Lake as Airman First Class Johnathan Drake, with the 5th Bomb Wing Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

Drake had been swimming on the lake Friday afternoon, when witnesses told investigators they lost sight of him, according to Ward County Sheriff Bob Roed.

The sheriff said responding deputies dove into the lake, pulled him out, and attempted life-saving measures.

Drake was rushed to Trinity Hospital due to symptoms of drowning, and was pronounced dead shortly before midnight, according to base public affairs.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Airman First Class Drake during this difficult time. His life has and will continue to have an impact on all of our Airmen. His memory will not be forgotten,” said Col. Michael Walters, Commander, 5th Bomb Wing.

The base indicated a memorial will be held for Drake on base June 23.
