BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - As part of a statewide radio upgrade for emergency first responders, the Central Dakota Communication radio equipment will get a second life with a new department.

As portable radios are decommissioned throughout the year, they will be turned over to the Bismarck and Mandan public works department for second hand use.

Communications Director, Mike Dannenfelzer says the new radios will allow for better communication within the departments.

“These systems that were used for public safety have better coverage than a single site that public works may have been using. So giving them a simul-cast site will improve their coverage significantly,” said Dannenfelzer.

First responders in Burleigh and Morton counties are expected to have upgraded radios by the end of summer.

CenCom will hopefully have the old radios to Bismarck and Mandan departments by the end of the year.
