EDGELEY, N.D. (KFYR) - Winning a region championship to play in the “B” is the best of times for any basketball team in the state.

Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier has won back-to-back Region-3 titles but this week is just the first opportunity at state, in those two years, for the Rebels.

Nearly a year after the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier boys basketball team claimed the Region 3 Championship, the Rebels did it once again.

Only this year, they’ll get to actually experience the state tournament.

Paxton Mathern, Rebels senior, said: “We worked our tails off last year to win the region championship. So, for that to get taken away from us, it feels so amazing, one of the best feelings in the world to work our tails off for another year and finally make it back to the state championship.”

Alex Huber, Rebels senior, said: “That Friday that the state tournament got cancelled, I knew that this is where we needed to be, this is where we’re going to be. So, I’m glad we got to do it again.”

Kevin Strobel directs the Rebels success from his front row seat and he is not surprised his team make another run.

Kevin Strobel, EKM Head Coach, said: “This group of guys are just one of a kind. They’re very determined, very seldom, there’s no whining or crying in practice. They just show up and work. They had this goal to win the region tournament all along. I don’t know if anyone was really going to deny it.”

The players say their run to the region title is a credit to what they do off the court.

Mathern said: “One of the biggest things for us group of guys. We’re so tight together, we’re all connected at the hip. Teamwork makes the dream work like they say. I think we’re a special kind of team.”

A special team that hopes to make a run to the very end.

Huber said: “We just need to keep working as a team. None of us have been there so it’s going to be a pretty eye-opening experience. I think if we go up there and play rebel basketball. We’ll see what happens.”

EKM is the three seed and it plays Rugby in the quarterfinals on Thursday at the Minot State Dome.
