United Community Bank Athlete of the Week: Bryson Elm
MINOT, N.D. – When the Bishop Ryan Lions need a spark, Bryson Elm said he tries to step up.
“If the mood’s down, then the entire practice is a bad practice. When we have bad practices, it’s just not a fun day for us. When the coaches get mad at us, we end up running for what we think is no reason, but it’s because of our attitude,” said Elm, senior forward/guard.
His coaches and teammates see a tenacious defender who can always keep the group positively focused, lifting up other Lions.
“That helps us guards honestly at practice every day on defense. Mental toughness is what we preach here a lot. One funny joke or one three-pointer can change the whole tide of the game or practice,” said Logan Merck, senior point guard.
Brody Bosch is in his first season as head coach, and he said Elm acts as an extension of the coaching staff.
“He’s our Energizer bunny doing everything we want defensively, making sure everybody’s in the right place. He’s always taking care of the young guys making sure they know what they’re doing,” said Bosch.
Elm has grown up in an athletic family with seven siblings, including his older sister, Shayla.
“She kind of pushed me to be a better athlete because she actually played basketball. When we play against each she always yells at me or I’ll be yelling at her. We are always trying to beat each other as bad as we can,” said Elm.
Elm and the Lions travel to Kenmare and Stanley this week after Monday’s home contest with the Dunseith Dragons.
