MINOT, N.D. - Thursday was supposed to be the eve of the North Dakota State Fair.

But COVID-19 had different plans.

Now, locals are figuring out a way for Minot to enjoy fair food, and support vendors who lost business.

Faith Hatton took to the streets of the first ever Fair Food Festival.

The parking lot of the local pool hall The Spot isn’t where you would expect to find fair favorites like kettle corn, cotton candy and snow cones.

”My general manager Shannon Stratton said we should just do something ourselves so that’s what we did. She just started calling people and this sort of came together,” said The Spot Owner, Sherry McGlaughlin.

The spur of the moment decision is making all the difference to local vendors like Chris Brown who have a unique service that’s usually put to use during the fair.

”During that time we use the fair track out at the fairgrounds so we don’t have any set up or anything so, it’s a little different but glad to be doing something,” said Brown.

For other vendors like Kasha Nels, no State Fair or Norsk Hostfest meant she would have no business at all.

”This event is great for us to still be out there, and still supporting the community and giving people something fun to do this weekend,” said Nels.

Many of the foods featured are only available at the fair and for a limited time, this weekend. With the cancellation of the State Fair and Hostfest the Fair Food Festival is the perfect place to get some of your favorites that you may have missed out on this year. Day one of the festival drew in a large crowd, some of which said they’re already planning on coming back.

”I’ll probably like after work probably this weekend again just to experience the other foods that  I can’t do all in one day,” said fair-goer, Cat Herrod.

Finding new ways to bring some fair fun to the Magic City.

The Fair Food Festival will be taking place at The Spot July 16-19. You can find more information on the Fair Food Festivals Facebook page which we'll have linked on our website.
