Small Staff Causes Waterpark to Close Early

Posted: Updated:
Labor Day weekend is usually a good time to spend outdoors, but this year there is one popular attraction in Mandan that will already be closed.

It's finally nice outside and that means people were able to enjoy the Raging Rivers Waterpark. Which was exactly what this kid wanted to do for his birthday.

"My cousin is here and it's a really hot day out and we just wanted to come to the park," says Dylan Wetsch.

And he came right on time, because after Thursday the park will be closed for the season, a few days earlier than expected.

"We want to have a safe number of lifeguards here. When we put the numbers together, we just didn't have enough to safely staff the park for the weekend," says Raging River's manager Kara Haff.

She says there was plenty of staff all summer, but with school starting many of the employees had other obligations.

"It really put a dent in the number of staff I had available to work this weekend," says Haff.

Stand up: "They may be closing early but when they re-open next year the park will be completely remodeled."

"It's going to be pretty major. I can only dream of what it's going to look like from the interstate as folks are driving by. Everything should be bright and colorful again. The slides are going to look totally different, and the insides of them will be totally regel coated and the outsides are going to be re-finished as well," says Haff.

The kid area is also getting a makeover, and the lazy river is being re-sandblasted. The whole project will cost just under a million dollars.

Haff says she will honor park passes next June if you still have some to use.
