Minot Airport Construction Continues

Posted: Updated:

What started as a pile of dirt will eventually be a new Minot International Airport.

“We're putting up the skeleton of the building, the structural steel, and all the framing. We're trying to move towards getting the building enveloped. That's going to get us enclosed and weather tight moving into winter,” says Spencer Hilde, the project coordinator.

Construction for the project started last September.

Right now, they're about 50 to 60 percent done with the framework.

Andy Solsvig, the Minot International Airport Director says they are constructing six gates.

“Four of them will have jet bridges to start with and the fifth gate will be used with and elevator and stairwell so we can access the 50 seat regional jets, in case all of the four bridges are used up,” he says.

After defrosting the ground in April, workers were really able to get moving in May.

In the past three months, a lot has been done.

The new airport will be two floors and have unique beams to give the building a good look.

Right now, they're also working on phase one of the new parking lot. When that's completed, it will provide 800 new parking spaces.

Solsvig says when construction is done, the move to the new terminal will happen overnight.

“We'll have everything moved in and the aircraft that arrives that evening will be parked at the new terminal,” he says. “People will depart out of the new terminal.”

A new terminal could also mean some other new things for Minot.

“People are going to want to fly in and out of here and I think when that happens, we'll see an increase in boarding, and the airlines will either bring in larger air-crafts or more flights,” Solsvig says.

All in a bigger airport, for a city that just keeps on growing.
