Kazakhstan Cattle Group Tours North Dakota

Posted: Updated:

Ranchers are usually busy with their cattle but they're taking a break to teach seventeen cattle specialists from Kazakhstan.

"They're in a very infantile state of learning and to bring all this technology to them that we've had and how we micro manage these cattle to get as much as we can out of them as producers in this country compared to what they do," said Larry White of the North Dakota Trade Office.

The group is learning everything they need to know about how to raise the cattle, and the co-owner of this ranch says he's happy to share his knowledge.

"Some people think that we're giving away our technology. I look at it as they need to feel their country and the more we can help them the better off we'll both be," said Brad Tokach.

And who better to learn from since Kazakhstan already has a working relationship with North Dakota.

"So far we've imported more than 25 thousand heads of registered cattle and most of those cattle was imported from right here in North Dakota," said Zharmukanov Nurlan.

While they are here they're also looking at some of the cattle they may want to purchase at a later date. But the main priority is soaking up as much knowledge as they can, specifically when it comes to how to handle the cattle in the cold climate.

"We showed them what we make for hay and corn silage and different feed sources for them and the comforts of calving in a warm heated barn versus out in the snow," Tokach said.

All with the hope that when the group returns to Kazakhstan they can begin to implement what they learned here in Morton County. The group also met with the Lieutenant Governor and Agriculture Commissioner.
