County Commission Cracks Down on Zoning Ordinances

Posted: Updated:

Williams County has recently seen a rise in the amount of people owning land without compliance.

The county has tried to have a better handle on it with help from their zoning investigator.

At the Williams County Commission meeting on Tuesday, the commissioners dealt with a property owner who was running a business that his land wasn't properly zoned for. These situations are similar to what the county zoning investigator deals with everyday.

"Neighbors will call me and say anywhere from the next door neighbor has campers. They're unsure who is staying there. All the way to where's the septic waste going. I also get calls about businesses being operated within the incorrect zoning. Another issue was by an owner running a business on his property that is zoned agricultural. He also had employees living on site. If it's zoned agricultural, the owner can't have employees living there," says zoning investigator Kameron Hymer. “I don't think most people realize that they need a permit to do that. Most people aren't out there just to purposely break the law or our ordinances.”

At another location, an owner was running a full commercial business and also had employees living there. The county commission recently denied the owner a conditional use permit.

“Specifically, I get the complaints, but I get help from everybody here,” says Hymer. “If somebody receives a violation notice, they usually meet with one of the planners too. I'm usually in that meeting as well. So, I'd say it's a team effort. I think things are getting a little more controlled.”

At a different location, another owner did the same thing as the previous ones. Hymer told her she couldn't have her employees living on the property, and she has since cleaned up everything.

“The best advice is if they're coming to the area and plan on staying in their RV, they need to check and see if it's a state approved RV park or if it's a temporary park. They need to have a county conditional use permit,” says Hymer.

Hymer added to legally have an RV on any property that a person has to have a conditional use permit from the county planning and zoning department.
