Salvation Army Hosts Annual Back to School Event

Posted: Updated:

With school starting just a couple week's away, the Salvation Army in Williston held its annual back to school carnival and backpack distribution on Saturday at the new Armory.

“My daughter needs some school supplies,” says Williston resident Justin Turcotte. “We're a little light on funds. We're still getting our feet on the ground after being unemployed for a while.”

“We have five kids, and we definitely need backpacks for them,” says Williston resident Rachel Vincent.

Inside the backpack, there are supplies specialized by what school and grade the students are going into.

All of the supplies and backpacks were donated for the event. There was also shoes available so the children could be sporting something new for the first day of school.

“It's nice to be able to serve people that come in. Especially the children that maybe don't have the things that they need to get started with school," says Holly Smith of the Salvation Army.

“New individuals coming into to town,” says Capt. Joshua Stansbury of the Salvation Army. "Maybe they weren't prepared for school or they spent their last dollar to come up. Or maybe they just need a little help with the high cost of living.”

For the carnival portion, there was a couple different games for people to choose from. Tickets were given to everybody so they could be exchanged for prizes.

“I think it's wonderful,” says Vincent. “I think it's a very good program. I think more towns and cities should have programs like this to help out people.”

Capt. Stansbury added a couple years ago they decided to combine the carnival with the backpack distribution and he says it’s been a win-win situation ever since.
