School Administrators Tour Coal Mine

Posted: Updated:
Packed on a bus, administrators learned all they could, in just one hour, about the BNI Coal's Center Mine. Teachers say it was an overall exciting and educational experience.

"A number of our students that grew up in this region of North Dakota, that come to our school," says North Dakota State College of Science President John Richman. "They event one of our many career technical education programs."

"I'm a professor in a county so this is not my area. But like to understand business processes and so that's one of the reasons I came on the tour," says Bonnie Klamm.

Klamm says being able to see all the giant machines, watching everyone hard at work, mining coal. It's an experience you can't get in a textbook.

"Even though I didn't understand all of it. Hearing the people talk about it and then seeing it," says Klamm. "You know, has been-that's just a hands on real good experience. To be able to take back to the classroom."

Klamm says her goal is to get some of her students back to the mine, whether it's for internships or for an interactive tour with machinists in the mines.
