Avoid Online Scams and Hackers

Posted: Updated:

You might feel like you hear about data breaches or account hacks more and more often. While you could feel helpless when cyber criminals get your information through a major source like an online store, there are ways to protect your information online.

The Computer Store of Minot owner Mark Jantzer gave us advice on how to avoid potential hacks.

"Make sure your software is up to date. Your operating system and your antivirus and malware software should be up to date and running," Jantzer says.

And if you don't want to rely on software alone, there are still ways to make your accounts less likely to be hacked.

Jantzer says to make sure you use a good password. He explains that a good password includes alpha numerics as well as a special character to make it difficult for someone to hack your password.

It might seem practical to pick a password that is easy to remember, for example, Minot. However, dictionary words and city names are easy for password generators to figure out and make your account a lot more likely to get hacked.

"It's a good idea not to use the same password over and over again," Jantzer says. "Because if someone gets your password for one account, then they've got it for all of your accounts."

And be careful what you click on. Your computer can be affected by clicking on pop-ups or going to websites that are not secure. If you find out one or more of your accounts have been hacked, you should report it at FBI.gov.

"Go in and set up new authentication," Jantzer says. "Typically, that would be a new email or username and a new password."

And be sure never to enter personal information on public or shared devices.
